Hello dave! Stumbled across this whilst browsing timing belt vids lol. Is it really wise doing this kinda work without beer?! ha! : D

Putting a Jack under a car’s oilpan = Never a good idea…i’ve heard of so many incidents where the oilpan just “breaks”…

  5. OlafurArons says:

Engine Lifetime with hondas is Excellent
    Hondas have VTEC & I-VTEC
Hondas have the Awesome CRX Series….& the most awesome car of all time, the NSX

GREAT VID. Thanks. U put a lot of efforts to make this. Really appreciated.

Great video! Don’t forget to tell people to use a wood block under the oil pan, and to use honda bond on the valve cover gasket corners at the cam towers so you dont get oil leaking out of the corners.
I love your remark at 5:25 rofl I said the same thing the first time I did a D17. But looking back, it’s easier on those than when they did that damn rear mounted alternator on the D15 and D16′s, I actually don’t mind the D17′s now.

i love how when you discard the old parts you say, “piece of $hit!”….lol this series will be helpful because i am doing to timing belt on my civic right now.

I am having difficulty getting the pulley off of the crank. I have tried an impact with no success, maybe yours has got more power….. IDK I even tried a breaker bar with a good sized pipe on the end of it.

  12. tuul75 says:

Yeah I dont know why he joked about it being “no effort at all” I am curious how you keep the crank pulley from turning without using the special hexagon tool. Maybe his impact wrench had the power…

  13. andyth0mps0n says:

I have a chain strap wrench…… i tried using a breaker bar but it could not do the job. I have a friend who has an impact with 500 ft.lbs of torque….. hopefully that will do the trick.

  14. DieselsAndDiodes says:

I would use the biggest impact wrench I could find, 500 ft lb should do the trick. There is no really easy way to hold the crank from turning on these engines, if you were to try to loosen the bolt by hand, so you kind of need an impact wrench. Crank bolt requires 130 ft lb on tightening so after years it is going to require a whole lot more to break it loose, considering the normal corrosion within the threads.

Dave, thanks for all the videos. Today I am really getting good info from you as I tackle this job myself on a similar Honda. I’ve been doing engine work since I was a wee lad but it is always helpful to hear about the specifics of a job ahead of time.
Your videos are among the most informative and helpful anywhere!

The alternator on my HOnda was pain in the ass to get it out. THe bolt was rusty he had to spray WD-40 over it to get the thing it.

  23. kduquett says:

The name of the song is Lunatic Fringe by a Canadian band Red Rider. The lead singer is Tom Cochrane, who went out on his own after a few albums with Red Rider.

  24. takingaleak says:

Good stuff. Thanks for the info

  25. BrealZ24 says:

Try turning your crank and cam gears by hand, hard right? Belts that are really bad wouldn’t skip a tooth, but a chain could if one of the chain guides failed. If a tensioner pulley blew apart then valve damage could result but if the belt just broke, there wouldn’t be enough force to move either the cam gears or the crank pulley, so no valves would slap. :)
